How to Grow Rattlesnake Pole Beans

The rattlesnake pole bean is a garden bean with purple markings on the green pods, resembling the markings of a rattlesnake. The pods themselves can reach 7 inches long, with the plants growing vines up to 15 feet long. This variety of bean is best grown on a trellis or chain link fence, but it is otherwise a low maintenance addition to your vegetable garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a site in the garden for planting the rattlesnake pole beans. The site should have well-draining soil, meaning it does not collect rain puddles 24 hours after the rain passes. These beans need full sun. If you have a chain link fence, consider planting the beans against it so you don't have to install trellising or garden stakes.

    • 2

Remove any weeds from the area with a garden hoe in the early spring, after the last frost.

    • 3

Lay a 2-inch layer of organic compost over the soil and till it into the soil using a garden tiller. Set the tiller to a depth of 3 inches.

    • 4

Insert the seeds into the soil at a depth of 1 inch. Space the beans 4 inches apart. If you are planting more than one row, space the rows 1 to 2 feet apart. Cover any exposed seeds with soil using your hands, and water the soil until it settles.

    • 5

Wait for the plants to germinate, or break through the surface of the soil. Install trellising between the rows, or insert small garden stakes next to each plant at a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Trellising installation requirements vary with the type of trellis you use.

Water the rattlesnake pole beans whenever the soil feels dry to the touch. As the vines become heavy enough to fall over, train them around the stakes or trellis. Secure the vines to the stakes or trellis with a twist tie.
