How to Germinate Green Bean Seedling

Germinating green bean seeds allows you to get an early start on the growing season. Green bean seeds are germinated with damp paper towels. The water in the towels allows for the outer shell of the green bean seed to crack open. The bean then emerges and sprouts from the seed. Germinating the seeds allows you to only plant seeds that will germinate, which will increase the amount of green bean plants in your home garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Tear off a paper towel section. Dampen the paper towel with water.

    • 2

Place the paper towel on a flat surface. Place a single layer of green bean seeds onto half of the damp paper towel. Do not allow the seeds to touch each other.

    • 3

Fold the other half of the paper towel over the seeds. Dampen a second paper towel and place it around the first damp towel. Fold the edges over to prevent air from contacting the green bean seeds.

    • 4

Place the damp paper towels inside a plastic bag. Seal the bag to keep the moisture contained inside.

    • 5

Place the bag in a warm location away from direct sunlight.

    • 6

Inspect the green bean seeds after four or five days. Open the paper towel slightly to see if they have germinated. If the seeds have not germinated, dampen the paper towels if necessary, then allow them to sit for another five days.
