How to Sprout Seed Beans

There are literally dozens of varieties of dried beans that are packed with nutrients, vitamins and protein. Beans that sprout have reduced enzyme inhibitors, fewer toxins and are easier to digest. Beans that are sprouted at home are fresher than those found at the supermarket and will not lose vital nutrients due to storage and shipping. Bean sprouts offer fresh, flavorful taste and are very inexpensive. By sprouting your own beans you'll have pounds of fresh sprouts for just pennies.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the beans carefully, removing any rocks, sticks or debris from the mixture. Remove any broken beans or beans that float. Flush with several rinses of clear water.

    • 2

Soak the beans in plain water for eight hours. Drain and rinse the beans in water.

    • 3

Spread the beans that require light to sprout on screened, stackable trays. You may purchase premade trays from an online vendor or make your own with 1-by-2-inch boards and window screening material. If screens are unavailable, the beans can be rinsed and placed in a clear glass jar. When using a glass jar, cover the opening with cheesecloth and invert the jar to provide drainage.

    • 4

Place the beans that prefer darkness for sprouting in linen or hemp drawstring bags. Bags can be purchased online or you can make your own. Bags can be constructed of any material that allows the water to drain freely; 12-by-18 inches is the ideal size. Hang them anywhere that allows free air circulation. Rinse the beans well and shake the bag to prevent sprout roots from attaching to the material.

    • 5

Store sprouted beans in sealed plastic bags in the refrigerator. If beans are not used within 24 hours, rinse with water, drain well and return them to the refrigerator.
