Garden beans, also known as snap beans, generally fall into two categories: bush and pole. Bush beans grow in self-supporting, low bushes and are prolific bearers. Pole beans grow in a vining pattern and need a stake or trellis for support.
Plant beans after danger of frost has passed. Depending on the cultivar, beans will be ready to harvest in approximately 55 to 65 days. Space plantings two weeks apart to ensure fresh beans all summer long.
Green beans are low in calories and provide fiber, protein and a variety of vitamins and minerals. They can be eaten raw or cooked. If you cook the beans, blanch or steam them briefly to retain as much nutrition as possible.
