How to Grow Coffee Beans From Seeds

A coffee bean is the seed of a coffee plant. Bean is the common name for large plant seeds, thus the names "seed" and "bean" are interchangeable when talking about the coffee plant. In order to grow coffee beans, the seeds must be germinated before they are grown. After germination, the seeds are most commonly grown in nursery beds or polybags (200-gauge black diothene).

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the seeds on a sand bed and cover them with moist burlap sacks or straw. When radicals, or growths, begin to emerge from the seed, the germination process is complete.

    • 2

Plant the pre-germinated seeds into a nursery bed. The soil should consist of 2.5 to 5 gallons per 3 feet of rotted cattle manure and 3.5 oz per 3 feet of phosphate fertilizer. Each nursery bed should ideally measure 3 feet by 20 inches. Space the seedlings roughly 8 inches apart.

    • 3

Provide about 50 percent shade with a canopy or tarp for the nursery bed for the first couple of months and gradually reduce the amount of shading until it is completely removed.

    • 4

Plant the pre-germinated seeds in a polybag if you do not wish to use a nursery bed. A mixture of 3 parts top soil to each part of course sand and cattle manure is typically used in polybags. Space the seedlings 5 to 6 inches apart. Apply .07 ounces of urea mixed with 1 gallon of water for every 3 feet of the bed in order to dress it with nitrogen.

Tend to your seedlings by watering them often (at least twice a week). If you are using polybags, make sure that they are well-supported.
