Container for Garden Green Beans

Green beans are a popular garden plant, normally grown in rows. They also grow well in containers, given the right care and conditions. Choosing the right container for green beans increases the chance of a healthy plant and a good yield.
  1. Varieties

    • Some green bean varieties grow better in containers. Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois recommend Topcrop, Tendercrop, Kentucky Wonder and Greencrop varieties for container gardening. Large pole bean varieties may get too large to grow easily in containers.

    Size

    • Green beans require at least a 1-gallon container for successful growth. Larger containers provide the beans with more space for their roots, but very large containers can be difficult to move. Beans in containers will need more frequent watering and fertilization than garden beans, especially those in smaller containers.

    Spacing

    • Unlike some other plants, container green beans may be grown several to a pot. Iowa State University recommends planting green beans two or three to a container. Space seeds for bush beans 2 to 4 inches apart, and seeds for pole beans 4 to 6 inches apart. Beans may also be planted in a hill, with four to six seeds, then thinned back to two or three plants.
