How to Plant Soybeans in July

Soybeans are easy to grow in the home garden. Although they are generally sown directly in the soil when it reaches 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the spring, it is possible to plant them as late as July. When you plant soybeans in July, you need to adjust certain aspects of your technique, such as planting more seeds than you normally would. Choose an early variety, such as Green Pearl or Envy, to shorten the growing time. Expect to harvest the soybeans within two months of planting.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the soybean planting area by pulling any weeds and raking out all debris. Dig into the top 10 inches of the soil and smash any large clods of dirt.

    • 2

Add 4 inches of compost to the soil and mix it into the top 10 inches using a gardening fork. Rake the bed until it is level and smooth.

    • 3

Push the soybean seeds down 1 inch into the soil, spacing them 2 inches apart. If planting more than one row, space the rows 20 inches apart.

    • 4

Water with a garden hose until the soil is wet to a depth of 8 inches. Keep an eye on the moisture content of the soil because it can dry out quickly in July.
