How Far Should I Space My Green Bean Plantings?

Green beans, also known as string beans or snap beans, are a versatile, easy-to-grow addition to home vegetable gardens. According to the University of Illinois, they are the second most popular garden vegetable after tomatoes.
  1. Types

    • There are two types of green beans: bush beans and pole beans. Bush beans grow without a support system and are low-maintenance. They are good for gardens with limited space. Pole beans require an upward support system, such as a trellis.

    Spacing

    • Allow 2 to 4 inches of space between bush bean seeds and 18 t o 24 inches between rows. Pole beans require 4 to 6 inches between seeds and 30 to 36 inches between rows. On a trellis system, allow 6 to 10 inches between pole bean plants.

    Other Gardening Practices

    • Plant green beans in early spring after any danger of frost. They thrive in soils with pH levels between 5.8 to 6.3. Avoid excessive heat and overwatering, which can cause pods and flowers to drop prematurely.
