Can You Use Permethrin on Bean Plants?

Bean growers today can choose from many varieties beyond string beans, including tender filet beans, dry soup beans, scarlet runner beans, asparagus beans and tepary beans. Bean plants are susceptible to insect infestations, and growers should learn their control options.
  1. Function

    • Permethrin is a synthetic insecticide that is chemically similar to naturally occurring pyrethroids, which are derived from chrysanthemums and are one of the oldest known insecticides. Permethrins incapacitate insects with a rapid knockdown effect that paralyzes the pests' nervous systems. This insecticide is effective on bean plants for 12 weeks after application.

    When to Use

    • Permethrin can be used to curb the following insect pests that attack bean plants: cutworms, bean leaf beetles, stink bugs, Mexican bean beetles, cucumber beetles, leafhoppers, corn earworms and aphids. This insecticide is effective against eggs, larvae and adult pests and also has a mild repelling effect.

    Warning

    • Permethrin should not be used near lakes, ponds or streams because it toxic to fish. In addition, do not use permethrin near flowering plants because the insecticide is extremely toxic to bees. Before using permethrin, read and follow all product instructions carefully. Avoid contact of permethrin with eyes and skin, and bathe thoroughly after using.
