Harvest Season for Pole Beans

A wide range of pole beans are grown around the country. Known for their long harvest season and high yield, they are relatively easy to grow in home gardens and grow by climbing up a vertical or diagonal support.
  1. Maturity

    • Different varieties of pole beans mature at different rates. Depending on which variety you choose, the beans may take 65 to 110 days to be ready to harvest. Harvesting time also depends on when you planted your crop. Beans are usually planted around the last spring frost date, which itself depends entirely on where you live.

    Ripeness

    • The state of the beans on your vines is far more important than the date on the calendar. Pole beans are ready to harvest when the pods are full, firm and fully elongated but before the beans become tough and fibrous and before the seeds inside the pods develop fully.

    Harvest Season

    • Picking the beans before the seeds mature encourages the plants to continue flowering and producing more beans, which is why pole beans have such a long harvest season. Once you begin harvesting, you can continue picking beans as they mature every few days for up to a month.
