How to Calculate Soybeans Yield

Calculate the total yield of a soybean harvest using the yield component method. This statistical method requires the soybean farmer to analyze the state of their field. Rather than count all the soybean pods in the entire field, this method requires farmers to go out and analyze a few representative portions of the field and average them together to determine the estimated soybeans per acre.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose 10 areas, each measuring 1/1000 of an acre (43.5 square feet) in the field. These areas should be chosen completely at random in order to ensure the accuracy of the calculation. Count the total number of soybean plants within these areas and average them (add all totals together and divide by 10). Multiply this average by 1,000 to determine the total population in plants per acre.

    • 2

Go to each section, choose 10 plants at random and count the number of seed pods on each of those plants. Average these together to determine the average pods per plant, and multiply this by the plant population from step one to estimate the total number of soybean pods for the average acre.

    • 3

Estimate the number of seeds by assuming that there will be 2.5 seeds per pod (some pods with two seeds, some pods with three), so multiply the total number of pods by 2.5. This will give you the number of seeds per acre.

    • 4

Estimate pounds per acre by dividing by 2,900 seeds per pound.

    • 5

Convert this into bushels by dividing by 60 pounds per bushel.
