Pinto beans require warm soil. When planted in 60 degree Fahrenheit or warmer soil, seedlings emerge in seven to 10 days. Germination is most successful in 70 to 80 degree soil. In soil temperatures less than 50 F, germination is poor and the seeds may rot.
Plant pinto bean seeds after the danger of frost is over. Pinto bean plants usually mature 70 to 90 days after planting. In a backyard garden, pull up the plants and allow them to lay in a row for five to seven days. Remove the seeds from the pods and dry completely. Store pinto beans in a cool dry place inside a sealed container.
A 100-foot row of pinto beans requires 3 to 4 oz. of seed. The 100-foot row yields approximately 20 to 25 lbs. of pinto beans. It may be impractical to grow pinto beans in a small garden because of the space requirement. Pinto beans are relatively inexpensive to purchase.
