Lima Bean Growth Information

Whether you prefer large Fordhook limas or small baby limas, the beans are a favorite served with a piece of cornbread or stirred into a casserole or hearty stew. Baby limas are actually mature beans of a smaller variety.
  1. Two Types of Plants

    • Lima beans are available in bush varieties and vining types. Bush limas are about 1-1/2 feet tall, while vining or pole type lima vines grow about 9 to 10 feet long.

    Growing Season

    • Limas require between 60 to 110 days to maturity, depending on the variety. They prefer cool weather, but will not tolerate frost. Plant limas after the soil has warmed to at least 65 F.

    Planting Information

    • Limas need to be planted approximately 1/2 to 1 inch deep in well-drained soil. Space baby limas about 3 to 4 inches apart, bush limas need 6 inches between plants, and pole limas require 10 inches.

    Harvest Young

    • Lima beans are ready to harvest when the pods are plump and bright green. Limas are best while still young, but fully formed.
