Pinto beans are seeds. Approximately 1,200 to 1,500 beans fill a 1-pound bag. Select beans with a bright color, which indicates fresh seeds. Do not plant pinto beans with cracked seed coats or pinholes, or the germination percentage will be low.
Pinto beans are a warm-season crop that does not tolerate frost. Plant the seeds 1 to 1 1/2 inches deep in warm, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.8 to 7.0. The seeds should germinate in four to eight days in 70- to 80-degree Fahrenheit soil.
Provide adequate water and fertilize with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Provide 3 tablespoons of fertilizer per 10-foot row. Pinto beans require 70 to 90 days to reach maturity. When the pods mature and turn brown, pull up the plants. Allow the plants to dry for one to two weeks. Split the pods and remove the dry seeds.
