Alexandra Spring and Eric Day of the Virginia Tech Department of Entomology recommend the use of diatomaceous earth as an organic control option for the control of a number of root maggots or worms on vegetables, including onions. Pyrethrin is another organic pesticide suggested for onion worm control by the University of Utah Extension.
Diatomaceous earth or DE is derived from fossilized remains of the diatoms algae. The mineral product is nontoxic and the grains have very sharp, microscopic edges that pierce the soft bodies of pests causing dehydration and death. Pyrethrin is a naturally occurring insecticide found in the pyrethrum daisies. The product affects the nervous system of pests.
Use natural-grade diatomaceous earth and use for dusting plants. Try to use it after a light rain, as this helps the products to penetrate the soil and stick to foliage. For control with pyrethrin, apply to foliage of infested plants. Pyrethrin is also sold under different trade names.
