Plant Food for King of the Garden Beans

King of the garden is a type of pole lima bean that is hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zones 3 through 9. King of the garden bears large pods with white to cream-colored seeds.
  1. Food

    • The ideal fertilizer for the king of the garden seed bed is 5-10-15. This will give the king of the garden seeds a good start. After that, use compost.

    Amount

    • Add 1 and 1/2 lb. of 5-10-15 fertilizer to the soil before planting. If the king of the garden plant foliage turns yellow, add a 2-inch layer of compost to the soil. Too much nitrogen will promote green growth at the expense of flowering, inhibiting the production of bean pods.

    Tip

    • Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer if it rains heavily. Apply it at the rate suggested on the fertilizer label.
