Choose a planting site where the beans will get full sunlight and water is easily drained away. Plant the beans after any danger of frost has passed and the soil is at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Add one cup of 5-10-10 or similar fertilizer for each 50 feet of planting row before you plant the seeds. Try to get the fertilizer down 6 inches below the surface.
Plant the bean seeds 1 inch deep in soil that is heavy and compacted, or 1 ½ inches deep in lighter, sandy soil.
Plant the seeds 2 to 4 inches apart in rows that are 2 to 3 feet apart. Give the beans 1 inch of water per week, preferably in the early morning.
Apply an organic mulch 2 to 3 inches deep around the planted seeds after the soil has warmed to help fight weeds.
