Basil requires a lot of light. Natural light is the best source, but four-tube fluorescent grow lights may be used when there is not enough natural light. When grow lights are used, leave the lighting on for 12 to 14 hours each day.
Select a window location with the most direct sunlight. The plants need to be turned daily in order to receive sunlight on all sides of the plant.
Indoor basil grows best in environments with temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and with a 10-degree drop at night. Setting containers on trays of gravel near a slightly open window will increase humidity and air flow necessary to prevent spider mites and fungal growth. Remove the flowers just above the first set of leaves to encourage leaf growth.
