Basil has a powerful fragrance that repels mosquitoes. A 2009 study reported in the American Journal of Applied Science concluded that basil oil is effective as a mosquito repellent, significantly reducing the number of mosquito bites among human test subjects.
By growing several pots of basil on your patio or deck, you may discourage mosquitoes from swarming around the area. Crushing basil leaves releases the essential oils into the air.
A basil-based topical mosquito repellent might include fresh basil blended with olive oil and vodka. Rubbing a few freshly picked leaves on exposed skin also provides protection.
While any type of basil may be used as a mosquito repellent, lemon basil, cinnamon basil and Peruvian basil have the strongest fragrances and seem to work best.
