Native to the Mediterranean, basil is an annual herb that flourishes in warm and sunny locations. One of the most common culinary herbs, basil is used to add sweetness and flavor to a diverse array of culinary dishes. There are many varieties of basil. Sweet basil is the most well known type. Holy, Thai, Mexican, purple, ruffled, lemon, clove and cinnamon are easily grown indoors in a sunny location or planted in the herb garden. The pungent scent of basil repels many household insects and is especially effective against ants.

      Place dried basil leaves on kitchen cupboard shelves to repel moths, weevils and ants. Replace once a month.
