How to Kill Mesquite

Mesquite plants (Prosopis spp.) are trees and shrubs from the pea family. The multitrunked plants come in both deciduous and evergreen varieties and are hardy enough to thrive even in rocky and poor ground in the desert. Mesquite trees have a mature height of up to 30 feet with dark-colored bark. The plants bloom with honey filled, greenish yellow flowers during spring and summer. The flowers lead to flat, edible pods that resemble beans. You can use a recommended herbicide to kill unwanted mesquite trees and shrubs in the landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a product containing hexazinone as a soil-applied chemical for the control of any size mesquite tree or shrub. You may treat the plants at any time of the year.

    • 2

Dilute the chemical by mixing with equal amounts of water. Mix enough herbicide to cover three feet of ground space around the plant or tree canopy. You may also use the herbicide undiluted.

    • 3

Apply evenly to soil using a drench gun or any other form of applicator. Water well after application to allow the chemical to move down into the roots. It takes at least two years for the plant to die entirely after application. The plant defoliates and regrows a couple of times before dying.
