How to Germinate Basil Quickly

Planting basil indoors six to eight weeks before the spring thaw and ground warming will produce sprouts that you can transplant into the ground once outdoor growing conditions are conducive. With proper care, basil seeds can germinate within 10 days. Fresh basil is a commonly used aromatic herb in tomato dishes as well as may other meat and soup recipes. Dry or freeze excess basil before the plants die off in the winter to get the most from your time and efforts.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your basil seeds 1/4 inch deep in potted soil. Select a potting soil that is rich in nutrients and has a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 for optimal results.

    • 2

Keep the soil moist but not heavily watered during the germination process.

    • 3

Place the pots in full sun for at least six hours per day. If natural sunlight is unavailable, use a growth light for 10 to 12 hours per day.
