Cleome Varieties

When I was young and first mentioned to my parents that I wanted my own garden plot to develop my green thumb, I planted easy-to-grow flower seeds to boost my confidence. Besides the nearly fail-proof zinnia, cosmos and marigold, cleome (Cleome hassleriana) proved another colorful fast-growing annual flower to show off my seemingly endless gardening talent to the neighbors. Also called spider flower, cleome grows in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun when no frosts occur. It also reseeds itself in the garden so new plants appear and continually bloom.
  1. Sparkler Series

    • First sold to the public around 2000, a collection of cleome cultivars were marketed as members of the Sparkler Series. Members of this series grow 3 to 4 feet tall and are bushier with more side branches compared to the usual cleome plants. The individual blossoms are a bit larger in diameter and petal size. Four cultivars are in the series: "Sparkler Blush" produces rose pink flowers with streaks of white. "Sparkler White" is pure white, "Sparkler Red" blooms are a bold coral-red and "Sparkler Pink" flowers are a strong medium pink.

    Queen Series

    • Released in the 1990s, plants in the Queen Series of cleome cultivars became widely grown in American gardens with their upright, 36-inch tall plants and clear, boldly colored flowers. White-flowers occur on "Helen Campbell" and a light, delicate color flowers on "Queen Pink." By contrast, the blossoms of "Queen Rose" are deeper pink, perhaps with a hint of pale violet-lavender. "Queen Violet" flowers are a particular stand-out, since the flowers are fully a medium purple-violet, looking like a shade of grape fruit drink. "Queen Cherry" displays deep rosy red flowers.

    Spirit Series

    • The Spirit Series of cleome mature 24 to 48 inches tall depending on soil fertility and summer warmth. They don't lose their lowermost leaves and look naked on their lower stems. "Spirit Frost" blooms white, "Spirit Appleblossom" makes red-pink buds that open pale pink, "Spirit Violeta" buds are magenta-pink but open to medium pink flowers. Dark rose with hints of red undertones occur on the blossoms of "Spirit Damask." "Spirit Merlot" flowers are medium purple-pink or purplish lavender. Perhaps the jewel of the series is "Senorita Rosalita," which will not self-seed from its medium lavender-pink flowers. The leaves are not sticky to the touch, either.

    Mixes

    • "Color Fountain" is a mix of various unnamed plants that grow about 4 feet tall. Blossoms on different plants are either all white, red-pink, medium pink or a white with pink blush. Any of the aforementioned series can be purchased in mixes. The mix is a random blend of seeds of all members of the series that when planted, creates a bed filled with all colors juxtaposed.
