How to Identify a Canna Cultivar Plant

Canna plants are tropical and semi-tropical perennials that can also be grown as tender annuals in cool climates. They are only hardy down to U.S. Department of Agriculture zone 8. Cannas are grown from rhizomes, which can be dug up and over-wintered in a warm area if you grow your cannas as annuals. Moist soil and full sun is the best location for a canna plant in your yard. Canna plants have some characteristics that make them identifiable.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the leaves of the plant. Canna leaves are large, both broad and long, and come in colors like all shades of green, purple, bronze, yellow, orange and red.

    • 2

Note the height of the plant. Canna often grow from 30 inches to 10 feet tall.

    • 3

Examine the bloom of the plant. Canna flowers grow on long stalks with a single bloom. The flowers range in colors from yellow, orange, red and pink. Red canna flowers may be the cultivar Cherry Red, Red King Hubert or Scarlet Beauty. Orange flowers may be the cultivar Stadr Fellbach, Orange Hubert or Wyoming. Yellow cultivars include Yellow King Hubert, Richard Wallace and Primrose Yellow. Pink cultivars include Shell Pink, Salmon Pink and La Boheme.
