How to Germinate Giant Tetra Snapdragon Seeds

Gardeners have enjoyed the beauty and simplicity of snapdragons since colonial times, as these old-fashioned flowers bloom profusely from early to midsummer until frost. Classified according to height, these flowers range from 6-inch dwarfs to towering 4-foot varieties. The giant tetra mix falls in the category of tall snapdragons and typically reaches heights of 2 1/2 to 3 feet. Starting them inside 10 weeks before the last expected frost in your area gives you a head start on the growing season.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill plant trays or individual pots with moist seed starter. Individual pots make transplanting easier, but either works well. Mist to moisten the soil.

    • 2

Sprinkle snapdragon seeds over the seed starter, spaced 2 inches apart. Gently press the seeds into the top of the soil, but do not cover them. Snapdragon seeds need light to germinate.

    • 3

Cover the tray with clear plastic wrap to maintain humidity and prevent drying. Place the seed trays or pots in an area that receives bright, indirect light.

    • 4

Maintain a temperature of 65 to 70 degrees. Optimal germination occurs in soil at 65 degrees.

    • 5

Watch for seedlings to emerge in 5 to 10 days. Germination time depends on the soil conditions and temperature.

    • 6

Remove the plastic wrap once seedlings emerge. Keep seedlings in bright, indirect sunlight until they develop the second set of true leaves. Gradually move them to direct sunlight once they are established and show signs of vigorous growth.
