How to Grow a Crested Celosia

Crested celosia, Celosia argentea var. cristata, also called crested cockscomb, is an annual plant with thick, colorful flowers produced on upright stalks. The blooms come in many shades, including pink, white, yellow, red and orange. Crested celosia grows from 6 to 36 inches tall and forms clumps up to 12 inches wide. It thrives in rich soil and exposure to full sun, though it will also survive in part shade. Regular watering is a must for crested celosia, as growth and blooming are inhibited by lack of moisture.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the chosen growing site by loosening the soil 8 to 10 inches deep. Remove large roots, grass clumps and rocks.

    • 2

Mix in a 3-inch layer of organic compost to enrich the soil and improve drainage.

    • 3

Plant crested celosia at the depth it grew when purchased; if planting seeds, follow the directions for depth on the seed packet. Allow at least 10 inches of space between each plant and water until the soil feels moderately moist.

    • 4

Spread 3 inches of mulch around the plants. Avoid resting it against the stems because this may result in disease.

    • 5

Keep the soil lightly moist at all times. Check the soil before adding moisture to prevent overwatering.

    • 6

Apply water-soluble fertilizer twice a month in the amount indicated on package directions.

    • 7

Snip off the blooms when they fade.
