How to Grow Cosmos Sensation Seeds

Cosmos sensation (Cosmos bipinnatus) is an annual plant with tall, fragile stem and delicate, fern-like foliage. The blooms resemble those of a daisy and are available in many colors, including pink, purple, red, white and rose. Cosmos sensation seeds germinate readily when sown directly into the garden. They do best in full sun and soil with good drainage. Planting the seeds in fertile soil may result in abundant foliage and few flowers, making them a good choice for areas where many other plants are unlikely to thrive.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a spade to loosen the garden soil approximately 6 to 8 inches deep. Remove large rocks and bust up soil clumps.

    • 2

Broadcast the cosmos sensation seeds over the prepared growing site.

    • 3

Sprinkle a 1/4-inch layer of soil over the seeds.

    • 4

Mist water over the site, using a spray bottle, until the soil feels moderately moist. This prevents the seeds from being buried too deeply. It takes approximately seven days for the seeds to germinate.

    • 5

Continue to water whenever the surface layer of soil feels dry. Apply moisture from a watering can after the seedlings appear.

    • 6

Thin the seedlings when they are 3 to 4 inches tall by snipping the weakest plants at ground level. Leave a space of 12 to 18 inches between each plant.
