How to Propagate Aztec Nicotiana

Aztec nicotiana, also known as jasmine-scented tobacco or nicotiana rustica, is an annual flowering plant that produces large and vibrant blossoms. The flowers range in color from white to pink, are powerfully scented and have a sweeping, trumpet shape. Aztec nicotiana grows about 3 feet high and does well in United States Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3a to 9b. To propagate Aztec nicotiana, you need some supplies from a local plant nursery and about 10 minutes to set up the seeds’ planters. The best time to plant Aztec nicotiana is the early spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle about 1/4 inch of gravel in the bottom of one planter for each Aztec nicotiana you plan to grow. The gravel allows the soil to drain properly, preventing the nicotiana from drowning.

    • 2

Fill the planter 1/2 inch from the top with fertilized potting soil. Pour enough water over the soil to soak it, or until it begins draining from the planter’s holes.
Sprinkle three Aztec nicotiana seeds in the center of the potting soil in each planter. Press the seeds gently on the surface of the soil with your fingertips, but do not cover them.

    • 3

Mist the Aztec nicotiana seeds with water from a spray bottle and place the planter in an area that is consistently around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the soil moist by misting it with the spray bottle daily. Ensure the Aztec nicotiana receives at least six hours of full sunlight per day. Aztec nicotiana seedlings should sprout within eight to 12 days.

Prepare an outdoor area to plant the Aztec nicotiana in the ground or a larger planter. Wait until after the last chance of frost has passed to prepare the area. Ensure the area receives at least six hours of full sunlight per day. The Aztec nicotiana needs at least 1 foot of fertilized potting soil in a well-drained area. Dig a 1-foot-deep, 10-inch-wide hole and fill it with potting soil, if you opt for in-ground. Use a 1-foot-deep, 10-inch-diameter container with drainage holes, if you opt for a planter.

Support the Aztec nicotiana between your fingers and turn the current planter upside down. Shake it gently to remove the Aztec nicotiana and make a hole in the prepared planting area large enough for its roots. Place the Aztec nicotiana into the hole and lightly pack soil around it. Water the area thoroughly; continue watering the Aztec nicotiana whenever the soil on the top 1/4 inch is dry.
