How to Grow Godetia (Clarkia Amoena)

Also called farewell-to-spring, these annuals charm with their delicate petals and watercolor-like markings. Thriving in the cooler temperatures of early spring in the North and winter in the South, they're easy to grow from seed outdoors and are a popular spring wildflower.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your local nursery for seedlings. Although godetia seedlings are still hard to find in some regions, it's easy to start them indoors or from seed outdoors.

    • 2

Start seeds indoors by planting six to eight weeks before your region's last frost date.

    • 3

Start seeds outdoors two to four weeks before your region's last frost date by sprinkling godetia seeds directly on the ground, leaving them uncovered. Mark the area and keep it moist.

    • 4

Plant established seedlings outdoors on or slightly before your last frost date. Space plants 4 to 10 inches apart, depending on plant height.

    • 5

      Keep moist but not soggy.

    • 6

Check regularly to see if plants are beginning to flop. If they do, support them by inserting a twiggy branch or two into the ground next to the plants.
