How to Grow and Take Care of Lantanas

Lantana is a small flowering shrub in the verbena family. It prefers full sun in warm regions and is hardy to zones 9 through 11 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Lantana bears 1-inch to 2-inch flower clusters in yellow, orange, purple and multi-colors. Some varieties are attractive in hanging baskets while others provide accents as small, sprawling shrubs. Lantana is an easy-care plant that requires little of the gardener.

Instructions

    • 1

Water young lantana plants to keep the soil moist at all times until establishment. Water the mature lantana with 1 inch of water once a week.

    • 2

Fertilize the shrub with 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring as soon as you notice new growth. Always water after applying fertilizer.

    • 3

Top dress the soil with a 3-inch layer of mulch. Spread it on the soil from 3 inches away from the plant's base to its widest point. Pine needle mulch provides the acidity lantanas prefer.

    • 4

Pinch 1/2 of new stem tips periodically throughout the season to encourage the lantana to grow bushier.

    • 5

Prune the lantana in spring by removing old stems. Cut it to within 3 to 6 inches of the soil.
