How to Germinate Impatiens Seed

Gardeners with shady flowerbeds are often in search of flowers suitable for growing in the shade. One of the most popular shade-loving flowers is impatiens. There are many different varieties of impatiens to choose from, ranging in color and size. Because impatiens are tender plants, always plant carefully in the spring to avoid injuring them. Start impatiens seeds indoors, paying special attention to light and temperature conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the seed tray to the top with potting soil. Spray the top of the soil lightly with a spray bottle full of water to moisten the soil.

    • 2

Lightly sprinkle the impatiens seeds over the top of the soil and do not cover them.

    • 3

Place the seed tray under the grow light and shine it continuously onto the seed tray for two days. Make sure the air temperature around the seed tray remains at approximately 75 degrees F.

    • 4

Sprinkle a light dusting of potting soil over the surface of the seed tray after two days. Cover the top of the seed tray with a sheet of aluminum foil so that the seeds are in complete darkness.

    • 5

Mist the surface of the soil daily with the spray bottle. Keep the seeds in the 75-degree room in complete darkness until the seeds sprout from the soil.

    • 6

Move the seed tray back under the grow light after the seeds emerge from the soil. Expose the seedlings to artificial light for four to six hours each day. Keep the seedlings moist and growing in the seed tray under the grow light until all threat of spring frost is over. Transplant the seedlings outside to a shady location.
