How Much Sun Do Casablanca Lilies Need?

Easy-to-grow Casablanca lilies are a garden favorite. These lovely blossoms enjoy plenty of sunlight, and thrive in warm, moist climates. Keeping the roots shaded is important for the health of the plant.
  1. Where to Plant

    • Casablanca lilies are hardy plants that grow well in UDSA zones 3 to 8. Plant them in the spring for cooler climates; Plant in either the spring or fall in warmer areas. These lilies grow rather tall--4 feet and higher--so choose a spot with plenty of room overhead that will be in the sun at least half of the day, or in full sun. However, the Casablanca lily's roots are sensitive to sunlight. To protect them, surround your lilies with low-growing plants such as sweet violets or Chinese plumbago. Remember to leave a 6- or 7-inch buffer around the lilies when planting to ensure that the bulbs get enough sun. Consider planting in a raised bed so moisture can easily drain, have more exposure to the sun, and also make it easier to plant the bulbs deep enough (4 to 6 inches is ideal).
