How to Plant a Bachelor Button From Seed

Bachelor's button, otherwise known as cornflower, is an excellent plant to use in mass plantings and as cut flowers. Plant bachelor's button seeds in early spring for your garden. You can also plant them in the fall if you live in a warmer climate. Protect plants started in the fall from extreme cold. Bachelor's button grows in a variety of soil and prefers full sun. Use them in wildflower plantings, flower beds and borders.

Instructions

    • 1

Till soil to a depth of 8 to 10 inches where you plan to plant bachelor's button.

    • 2

Rake over the soil to remove large pieces of debris and smooth out the surface.

    • 3

Make random plantings of bachelor's button by marking off areas to plant using the handle end of the rake.

    • 4

Broadcast seeds in these marked off areas by spreading them over the soil with your hand.

    • 5

Cover the seeds with an eighth of an inch of loose topsoil gathered from another area of the yard or garden.

    • 6

Thoroughly water the newly planted seeds. Keep them watered until they germinate, which can take 7 to 25 days.
