How to Space Impatiens in Planting

If you have shady growing areas in your landscape, make sure you save room for impatiens flowers either as focal plants or as colorful borders. Impatiens plants thrive easily throughout the summer and will bloom prolifically with minimal care. As you plan your planting area, consider how tall you want your impatiens plants to grow. The height you desire will determine the spacing of the impatiens plants.

  Prepare the shady growing area in the spring after all threat of frost is over. Work the soil with the garden spade down to a depth of between 6 and 8 inches. Add 2 inches of compost to the soil and work this in with the garden spade. Rake the soil surface smooth to finish the garden preparation.

  Plan your growing area. If you are planting impatiens plants as a border, space the impatiens plants between 8 and 12 inches apart. This will create a low and continuous border. If you desire your impatiens plants to be taller and more spread out, space the impatiens plants approximately 6 inches apart.

  Dig holes for each impatiens plant according to your growing plan from step two. Dig the holes deep enough so that the impatiens plants will be at the same depth as they are growing in the temporary containers.

  Place each impatiens plant into a prepared hole and fill soil back into the holes around the roots of the impatiens plants. Tamp the soil down firmly with your hands.

  Water the newly planted impatiens plants generously immediately after planting.
