How to Plant Million Bells (Calibrachoa)

Million bells are a petunia-like annual that add a flare of color to your garden, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to drink from their sweet nectar. They come in a variety of colors, from yellow to purple, and are actually a member of the potato family. Due to their compact, yet trailing nature, they are often found in hanging baskets, window boxes or lining the edge of flower beds. If properly cared for, million bells will bloom throughout the growing season.

  Locate a full sun plot in your garden where the soil is moist but well-drained. Soil pH should be slightly acidic. If you're not sure about the pH of your soil, you can test it yourself with an at-home test kit, which can be found in your local home and garden store.

  Dig small plots about 4 to 6 inches deep and spaced between 8 and 10 inches apart.

  Lower the million bells plants into the plots, covering the roots completely. Do not accidentally cover any of the foliage, as this will promote plant rot.

  Cover roots with soil and a mixture of nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer and pat firmly around the base of the plant with your hands.

  Water moderately, providing moisture, but not drowning the plants. Continue to water regularly, keeping the soil moist.
