How to Care for Cosmo Plants

Cosmos are annual flowers that come in a variety of colors, including red, pink, orange and white. Besides being an ornamental addition to any garden, the flowers attract butterflies and bees as well. It's also easy to care for these plants. In fact, according to Texas A & M University Extension, "the 'problem' which many people encounter when growing cosmos is that they 'over-care' for their cosmos plants."

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that your cosmos receive adequate sunlight. The plants thrive in full sunlight.

    • 2

Do not fertilize the plants. Doing so will only lead to excess foliage rather than flowers. Cosmos do well in poor soils.

    • 3

Water the cosmos very sparingly. In most climates, the cosmos require no watering at all. However, if you find that your plants have not received rainfall for several weeks, water them thoroughly in the morning or evening.

Cut the flowers down to 18 inches with pruning shears once the flowers have dried. This encourages a second blooming cycle.
