Annual Plants for Hanging Baskets

Hanging baskets filled with annuals are a great way to brighten and decorate any porch or balcony. They look great and often attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your home. Annuals are planted once a year and come in a wide variety of options and colors.
  1. Petunia

    • Petunias come in lots of varieties and colors. You can choose among colors such as white, purple, pink, red and blue. Plant your petunias in the center of your hanging basket and the bright blooms will soon spill over the sides. Petunias love the sun and don't require much upkeep, so they are great for a beginning gardener.

    Lobelia

    • Lobelias are great for porches that sit in partial shade for most of the day, because they don't require much sun. The lobelia is a trailing plant, so it will have tendrils running over the rim of the basket. The flowers are small, and come in shades of blue, red and pink.

    Fuchsia

    • There are more than 100 varieties of fuchsia flowers. The American Horticultural Society recommends the garden variety or fulgen variety for hanging baskets. These flowers love the sun and range in color from pale pink and white to orange and violet.

    Glory Flower

    • The glory flower is an unusual annual because it grows from three to six feet high. If you choose to plant this striking red and gold annual, be sure and allow for its height when you hang the basket. The glory flower is also known as the climbing lily or flame lily.
