Marigold Flower Information

Reliable, easy-to-grow annuals, Marigolds (Tagetes spp.) aren’t susceptible to disease or insect issues. Their height ranges from about 6 inches to 36 inches tall, depending on the variety, and their dark green, ferny leaves are frequently fragrant. Marigolds have medium-sized flowers in a spectrum of bold hues from yellow to mahogany, and add color to edging, borders and container gardens. Encourage marigolds to produce the most flowers by promptly removing dead blossoms.
  1. Beloved Marigold Varieties

    • African marigolds (Tagetes erecta) and French marigolds (Tagetes patula) attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and appreciate a bit of light shade in the afternoon. African marigolds bear double, midsummer blossoms up to 5 inches wide, in whitish, yellow and orange, atop stems about 10 to 48 inches tall. “Crush” is an extra-dwarf cultivar, 10 to 12 inches tall, while “Aurora” enjoys warm, humid weather and “Park’s Whopper” has extra-large flowers. Compact and bushy, French marigolds grow 6 inches to 12 inches tall and produce 2-inch-wide blossoms in red, orange, yellow and bicolor. For hot sites, choose “Safari” and for hot, humid climates, try “Bounty.”
