How to Grow Begonias Outside

Wax begonias (Begonia x semperflorens-cultorum) are hardy plants with shiny heart-shaped leaves and demure rose, pink, red or white flowers that will bloom throughout the summer with minimal attention. Although wax begonias are valued for their ability to grow in low light conditions, the plants will thrive in full sunlight as well. Plant begonias in the spring after all danger of frost has passed.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase young begonia plants at a garden center or nursery. Select compact plants with healthy green foliage and no yellowing or brown leaves.

    • 2

Select a spot for the begonia. Although wax begonias will grow in full sunlight or partial shade, the plants require well-drained soil. If you live in a climate with hot summers, plant the begonia where it will be protected from sun during the afternoon.

    • 3

Prepare to plant the wax begonia by cultivating the soil to a depth of 8 to 10 inches, using a garden fork or a spade. Rake 3 to 4 inches of compost or manure into the soil.

    • 4

Dig a small hole for the wax begonia, using a shovel or a trowel. The hole should be just deep enough to accommodate the plant's root ball, as planting too deeply can cause the wax begonia to rot.

    • 5

Remove the wax begonia from its nursery container and plant the begonia in the hole. Allow 10 to 12 inches between each plant.

    • 6

Water the wax begonia immediately after planting. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Water the begonia at ground level and if possible, avoid splashing water on the foliage. Water early in the day so excess moisture can evaporate before evening.

    • 7

Dig wax begonia and bring the plant indoors for the winter before the nights turn chilly, if desired, as wax begonia won't tolerate cold weather. Place the plant in a container filled with commercial potting soil, and put the plant in a sunny window.
