Shade Loving Annual Flowers

There are many gardeners who love to plant annual flowers. Annuals work well filling in empty spots in the garden or in containers on on the patio. For those needing shade-loving annuals for the landscape or patio, there are some that are numerous shade garden annuals to use wherever you need a little extra color.
  1. Foxglove

    • Digitalis purpurea, known as the foxglove or finger flower, can be a short-lived perennial but is generally treated as an annual. Leaves are white-woolly or dark green with tubular flowers on stalks. Flowers bloom in spring or summer and last approximately a month. Plant a foxglove in moist acidic soil with partial shade. Water it regularly. Propagate by seed.

    Wishbone Flower

    • Torenia fournieri, known as the wishbone flower or bluewings, is an annual that attracts hummingbirds. It grows 12 inches tall and nearly 12 inches wide. Flowers are trumpet-shaped and velvet-like. Leaves are hairless. Flower color depends on cultivar and can be white, pink, lavender or purple. Plant a wishbone flower in moist rich soil with partial shade or full shade conditions. Propagate by seed or by cuttings.

    Red Prickly Poppy

    • Argemone sanguinea, known as the red prickly poppy or red pricklypoppy, is a red or pink annual that grows 3 to 6 feet high. Flowers bloom from February through May. Plant a red prickly poppy in partial shade in dry sandy, loamy or clay soils. They will attract bees and insects for the nectar. Propagate via seed.

    Prairie False Foxglove

    • Agalinis heterophylla, known as the prairie false foxglove or prairie agalinis, is a pink or purple annual that grows 1 to 3 feet tall. Flowers bloom from June through October. Plant a prairie false foxglove in partial shade in any soil. It will attract butterflies to the landscape. Propagate by seed.

    Huisache Daisy

    • Amblyolepis setigera, known as the Huisache daisy or honey daisy, is a fragrant gold ray-flower that grows 6 to 15 inches tall. Branches are rough and hairy. Flowers bloom from March to June. Plant a Huisache daisy in partial shade in dry well-drained soil. It attracts butterflies to the yard. Propagate by seed.
