Cut the grass with your lawn mower on its lowest setting so that the poana grass is just barely sprouting above the ground level.
Moisten the grass and soil by spraying the area with a garden hose. Avoid causing puddles or mud to arise.
Press sheets of newspaper immediately onto the moist surface in a thickness of eight to 10 sheets. Secure the edges of the newspaper with rocks or other objects heavy enough to prevent the newspaper from blowing away.
Apply a layer of mulch 3 inches thick on top of the moistened newspaper sheets. After four weeks, the grass will be smothered beneath the newspaper and mulch. The newspaper will naturally decompose and the mulch can be stirred into the soil for a new planting.
