Growing Information on Portulaca

Portulaca is a low-maintenance annual with small, rose-like flowers. It typically grows less than a foot tall and makes an attractive groundcover. It thrives in rock gardens, in cracks in rock walls and in spaces between steppingstones. Portulaca is a versatile edging plant for borders and in containers.
  1. Requirements

    • Portulaca, commonly called moss rose, is a drought-tolerant annual that grows well in full sun and almost any type of soil. It thrives in any part of the United States, but dies back when touched by frost.

    Planting

    • Sow seeds on prepared soil after the last frost date or start them indoors 6 to 8 weeks before you plan to set out the plants. The seeds are very fine and difficult to scatter or spread. Mix them with sand to make them easier to handle.

    Care

    • Although it tolerates drought, portulaca flowers best when watered regularly. Water the soil rather than the plant to prevent damage to the flowers. The plants don't need fertilizer.

    Problems

    • Moss rose is subject to crown rot in poorly drained soils. Aphids and root-knot nematodes are sometimes a problem. Use insecticidal soap sprays against aphids. Unfortunately, there is no good defense against nematodes.
