Annual Spreading Plants

Annuals are perfect for adding color to your flower beds. Some grow quickly to help fill in borders or gaps between perennials and shrubs. With their bright colors, annuals attract butterflies and other beneficial insects to your garden to help with pollination and pest control.

  1. Poached Egg Plant

    • This hardy annual is fast-growing and self-seeding. Limnanthes douglasii has cup-shaped flowers of yolk-yellow rimmed with white. It thrives in sunny areas and will tolerate most soils.

    Sweet Alyssum

    • Drowning in tiny blooms, sweet alyssum is popular in beds and borders. Lobularia maritima grows quickly and is very fragrant. Sweet alyssum blooms all summer long but you can extend the blooming period by deadheading regularly.

    Moss Rose

    • This spreading annual fills low borders well with plenty of color. Portulaca grandiflora needs lots of sun but rewards you with blooms in a range of colors all summer long. Moss rose will tolerate most soil types. However, it does not tolerate frost at all.

    Lobelia

    • A popular bedding plant, lobelia blooms in a variety of blues, lavenders and violets. Lobelia can be found in both bushy or trailing varieties. All perform well in warmer climates and, once established, only need water once or twice a week.
