Many gardeners prefer annuals to perennials because the former provides the option to completely change the flower garden landscape every year. Different varieties of annuals can be planted to bloom throughout the year, altering the colors and design of the garden several times. Since most annuals quickly sprout and flourish, the visual rewards are quickly observable.
Annual seeds can be planted inside in pots during winter months and transplanted to the garden after the final frost has passed. They can also be sown directly into the ground at the end of winter when the soil becomes warm enough to till.
Annuals need lots of water to produce seeds and keep blooming. Removing dead blooms encourages new growth. For best results, fertilize annuals every two to three weeks with a plant food fortified with special blooming nutrients and additives.
