Impatiens should be planted in the shade in well-drained soil. The plants will start to wilt when they need water. Covering the soil with mulch can help retain moisture in the soil for the impatiens.
Impatiens grow well in containers filled with well-drained planting medium. Add water until it runs out the bottom of the container. Clay containers absorb water, and the impatiens planted in them will need to be watered more often than those planted in plastic containers. Outside containers might need to be watered each day.
The amount of water indoor impatiens will need depends on the moisture content of the air in the building. Winter heating and exposure to sunlight will shorten the time between watering.
