Facts About Black Heart Flowers

Black heart flowers bear dark, black seeds inside the center of their flowers, which are often white -- giving them the name "black heart." The flowers grow as annuals, but the joy of growing black heart flowers is that you can propagate the seeds and sow them every spring.
  1. Biological Family

    • Black heart flowers are members of the Cardiospermum Halicacabum family. The species grows as a vine that flowers in mid-summer, with black seed hearts that form in the center of the flower in fall.

    Common Names

    • Common names for flowers with black hearts are Balloon Vine, Love in a Puff and Heartseed. Cardiospermum winds and spirals its growth to a length of 10 feet during its growth and blooming season.

    Seed Pods

    • Gardeners grow Cardiospermum vines for their seedpods, more than for their flowers. The pods stay "inflated" until popped -- by man or Mother Nature. You can collect the seeds and save them to plant in spring, or you can allow Mother Nature to do her own work and reseed the black heart into the soil for a mid-summer bloom.
