The Firefly series are dwarf plants, forming compact mounds of succulent, fleshy stems and lance shaped leaves. The entire plant is covered in numerous tiny flowers in many colors. It blooms all summer long. The firefly hybrids, although treated as annuals, are actually tender perennials native to Africa.
Firefly Impatiens are easy to grow from seed. Start them inside six to ten weeks before the first frost date in your area. Do not cover the seeds with soil since they need light to germinate. Keep the seeds moist until they germinate in about two weeks. Plant outside in a cool shady area with moist rich soil after the last frost date.
Pinching off the blooms as they go to seed is the best way to ensure you do not end up with millions of tiny seedlings all over your garden. But, in most areas, this is not an ongoing problem since the first frost will kill them. The Firefly series are hybrids. Saving and planting the seeds will not produce the same plant. If you want more of the same plants you will have to buy more seed. A cheaper way to get more plants is to take cuttings from your existing plants.
