How to: Collecting Coleus Seeds

Coleus plants have eye-catching foliage available in many colors, from sage green to bright jewel tones. They are tender perennials but grow as annuals in most locations. In mid- to late summer, a non-descript flower spike develops, which most gardeners clip off. If you want to collect coleus seeds, you must leave this spike in place until it turns brown. Allow the seeds to dry completely and stored in an airtight container until spring. Keep in mind, however, that the seeds of hybrids will not produce the exact plant that they were gathered from.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave the flower spikes in place on the healthiest coleus plants in the garden.

    • 2

Examine the flower spikes regularly during late summer and early fall to determine when the seeds are ready to collect. The spikes will turn brown and feel dry to the touch when fully ripe.

    • 3

Clip the flower spikes from the plant when the seeds are ready to harvest. Hold the spikes over an envelope and run your hand gently from top to bottom to loosen the seeds.

    • 4

Put the seeds in a flat container and allow them to dry for five to seven days.

    • 5

Place the seeds into an airtight jar and label. Store the jar in a cool, dark location such as the refrigerator.
