Cascading Lobelia

Lobelia erinus, or cascading lobelia, is a trailing annual that has a mature height of 6 inches and a spread of 16 inches. An annual plant is one that grows, flowers, sets seed and dies in one growing season.
  1. Growing From Seed

    • Seeds that do not receive enough light have tall, weak stems.

Start seeds indoors, under lights, eight weeks before the last frost in your area. Do not move the young plants outdoors until the last frost is over since cascading lobelia is not frost tolerant.

    Planting In The Garden

    • Work the soil and add compost so the young plants will thrive in the garden.

Cascading lobelia will not tolerate drought, so water on a regular basis. Plant cascading lobelia in moist, well-drained soil amended with organic matter. Plants that are grown in partial shade tend to flower longer into the summer than those grown in full sun.

    Bloom Cycle

    • A single vivid blue flower

The vivid blue, white or pink flowers bloom early in the season during the cooler months. Cut them back once the heat of summer arrives to encourage them to bloom again come fall.
