Can You Root Moss Roses?

Also known as portulaca, moss rose is an easy-to-grow annual with a spreading habit. It grows 6 inches high and has 2-inch petals in shades of white, pink, coral and yellow. Although it self-seeds so easily that some consider it a perennial, moss rose can also be propagated with rooting cuttings.
  1. Growing Conditions

    • Moss rose thrives in a hot, sunny location. It can grow in even the poorest soil, as long as it is well-drained. After planting, it only requires watering when the plants begin to wilt.

    Cuttings and Rooting

    • Varieties of portulaca that can be propagated by cutting and rooting are Radiance Bicolor, Radiance Fuchsia, Yubi Summer Joy, Duet Yellow and Duet Rose. Radiance Bicolor, Radiance Fuchsia and Yubi Summer Joy grow well in containers.

    Considerations

    • Plant moss rose in a soil-based potting compost mixed 50/50 with sharp grit. It is not necessary to feed moss rose. If the soil gets waterlogged, root rot may ensue.
